Social Enterprise
There is a strong sense of community in Lanarkshire and this has led to a growing number of social
enterprises, businesses that trade to tackle social problems or to improve communities. And while they
make their money from trade, all profits are invested back into the business or the local community.
There are over 150 social enterprises in Lanarkshire, generating an annual income of more than
£200m trading in sectors from food and drink to delivery services. Companies like courier company
Delivered Next Day Personally CIC go one step further by also helping to break down barriers that
prevent people with disabilities from working, enabling a flexible business model that puts their care
and health to the forefront.
Both councils also offer support through strong
partnership agreements to increase public sector
procurement spend and improve data on the local
economy sector to inform policy development and
measure the added value on the social return on
investment. In fact, North Lanarkshire Council was
the Social Enterprise Scotland 2013 Award winner
for Social Enterprise Market builder for having
a strong and clear focus on developing and
supporting social enterprise, through a variety of
policies and services.
