Energy
The energy sector is a vital contributor to the
Scottish economy and includes oil and gas,
thermal generation, low carbon industries
and renewable environmental activity. There
are 384 wind turbines operating on wind
farms of four or more turbines in South
Lanarkshire alone, generating enough
electricity to power 450,000 homes.
The sector employs over 250,000 people in
Scotland and there is likely to be more
demand for up to 40,000 jobs by 2020.
Lanarkshire is a growing energy hub outside
of Aberdeen due to the bigger pool of skilled
labour available and connectivity to nearby
major cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Some of the energy companies located in
Lanarkshire include SP Energy Networks,
FMC Technologies and Hamilton based
Intertek, who are recognised as the leading
provider of technical inspection services for
the global energy market.
