Lanarkshire Business Guide_2015 - page 45

Engineering & Technology
From the invention of the steam engine to the telephone,
Scotland has always been at the forefront of engineering.
The sector generates a turnover of £24.4bn for Scotland and
there are nearly 10,000 technology and engineering companies
employing 150,000 people in total across the country.
Lanarkshire’s industrial heritage continues to attract, nurture
and develop high value engineering companies in the region.
Established in 1993, Martin Aerospace in Lanark is a highly
successful manufacturer and supplier of quality critical
components and assemblies to the aerospace industry and
works with some of the biggest companies like Rolls Royce
Engines, which powers the Airbus planes.
And at the other end of the scale, there are companies such
as Gas Sensing Solutions in Cumbernauld, who were recent-
ly awarded with the Innovation Award 2014 by the Institute of
Physics for their unique LED/PD technology for measuring
concentration levels of carbon dioxide.
With readily available industrial space and a nurturing
environment from the councils in Lanarkshire, these
companies play an important role in Scotland’s engineering
economy with many supporting larger companies
nationally and contributing to the next wave of innovative
Scottish technology.
There is excellent
support to assist
companies like ours
to grow as fast as
possible. Also high
quality employees
and infrastructure
system.
