Ravenscraig
The former Ravenscraig steelworks closed in 1992 and its redevelopment is one of the largest urban
regeneration projects in Europe.
The scale of the redevelopment is comparable with the creation of a small town and will result in
significant benefits at both a local and national level. The overall development is expected to create
some 12,600 jobs and attract in excess of £1.4 billion of private sector investment.
The first phase of the site servicing and £65m infrastructure works was completed in 2008 and has
delivered the following:
8
Planning permission granted for residential development of 900 homes.
8
A new £70m campus for New College Lanarkshire, the third largest further education facility in
Scotland, which was opened September 2009 and attracts over 20,000 students a year.
8
A £30m Regional Sports Facility which can accommodate up to 5,000 people for concerts and
exhibitions. It was jointly funded by North Lanarkshire Council, SportScotland and Ravenscraig Ltd
The second phase is based around the creation of a new town centre likely to result in a total private
sector investment of around £425m and this will be the most significant phase of development
at Ravenscraig.
The Phase 2 infrastructure plan is fundamental to the wider development of the Ravenscraig site due
to the nature of the enabling works and connections to the wider urban corridor. It will enable the site
to be accessed from both the M8 and M74, greatly increasing the connectivity of the whole area of
Motherwell and Wishaw and prospects for commercial development and private sector investment.
As well as the physical redevelopment of the site, North Lanarkshire Council aims to maximise the
economic benefits of the project by ensuring that local people and businesses benefit from the
redevelopment of Ravenscraig.
