University of the West of Scotland (UWS)
University of the West of Scotland (UWS) aims to have a transformational influence on the
economic, social and cultural development of the West of Scotland, and beyond, by providing
relevant, high-quality, inclusive higher education and innovative and useful research. The University
is committed to making the communities it serves more successful; and create opportunities for all
to participate.
UWS is unique due to its geographical spread, having campuses in Ayr, Dumfries, Hamilton and
Paisley. The University serves as the local university for over 30% of Scotland’s population. Across
the campuses the University offers a wide range of academic, social and sporting facilities and
delivers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and research degrees.
Testament to the quality of the University’s courses, teaching and facilities, the number of
international students attending UWS continues to increase annually. The University’s 15,500
students include around 1,100 EU and international students, who benefit from an exciting,
culturally diverse and cosmopolitan learning environment.
UWS is also one of Scotland’s most active universities in delivery of the Knowledge Transfer
Partnerships programme, which brings businesses and higher education together to share technology
and skills to effect innovative change. With twelve KTPs underway in 2014, UWS is the second
most active university in Scotland in the programme. The University is also a founding member of
CEED - the Centre for Engineering Education and Development - a community of academics and
business people working together for mutual benefit.
It is a hugely exciting time to study at UWS with the recent announcement of the next phase
of a multi-million pound investment programme encompassing all aspects of work across all
four campuses. The latest £3.7 million investment is being made through the UWS Strategic
Investment Fund to ensure the University meets the key performance indicators (KPIs) outlined in
its new Corporate Strategy, and brings the total investment commitment to over £16 million. This
announcement follows the recent news of a £12 million investment in Information Services phased
over the next three years with improvements being made across all campuses to enhance the
University’s current learning spaces and facilities.
