It is the largest single centre of aerospace manufacturing in the UK as well as a leading centre of excellence in Europe. The areaÕs strengths include the close proximity of major companies such as BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce and Airbus, the established infrastructure and skills base and the high concentration of universities. Within the city region, the Manchester University Aerospace Research Institute contributes to the strength of the industry through sustaining applied research and development, maintaining and enhancing the UKÕs position in the global aerospace market. An alliance between Northern Universities and the UKÕs aerospace industry, NATEC was established in 2002 and provides access to technology solutions by exploiting existing research activities.
