Local Development & Regeneration | Metrolink set for further Expansions W ork is underway to take Metrolink to Chorlton, Oldham, Rochdale railway station and Droylsden. When work is complete, trams will run every six minutes during weekdays from Oldham, Drolysden and Chorlton, and every 12 minutes from Rochdale. GMPTE is also improving tram connections into Salford Quays by extending the Metrolink network into the new MediaCityUK development. MediaCityUK will see more than 15,000 people working for the media and creative industries, and will include the BBCÕs new northern headquarters. As well as serving MediaCityUK, this new Metrolink extension will also improve access to The Lowry, residential areas and the Imperial War Museum. The 360-metre extension will start at the Eccles line near the existing Broadway stop and end at a new tram stop in MediaCityUK. The new stop will be within a short walking distance of The Lowry. Investment hopes The Metrolink system will be expanded even further if Greater Manchester secures an investment of up to £3bn in its public transport network. The Association of Greater Manchester AuthoritiesÕ (AGMA) bid to the governmentÕs Transport Innovation Fund (TIF) for a grant of £1.5bn to spend on public transport has been agreed in principle. A further £1.2bn of investment in Greater ManchesterÕs buses, trains and trams would come from a 30-year loan served by a limited peak-hour congestion charge. www.metrolink.co.uk | www.gmfuturetransport.co.uk
