The Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) is working
with business and academia to support the growth of LiverpoolÕs

knowledge economy.

Liverpool Innovation Park 
The Liverpool Innovation Park (LIP) was created by bringing together three adjoining business sites on Edge Lane, Liverpool Digital and the Wavertree Technology Park. Together as LIP they have the potential to house a business community totalling in excess of one million sq ft of floor space. Importantly, the Innovation Park is joined to the cityÕs knowledge quarter by the Knowledge Innovation Corridor which provides a two-way flow of businesses, talent and ideas that will benefit research, company development, job creation and graduate retention. 
Liverpool Science Park

The Agency also supported the development of Liverpool Science Park - a leading location for science and knowledge-based companies. 
Phase one of the project was opened in 2007 as the second phase got underway. This saw the beginning of construction on an £8m, 40,000 sq ft second Innovation Centre at the site, next to the cityÕs Metropolitan Cathedral. The park could support as many as 7,000 local jobs within the next 10 years. 
National Biomanufacturing Centre 
Merseyside is home to a number of priority sectors, with one of its key success stories being the biomedical sector. The NWDA has led a number of initiatives, including providing £34m funding for the National Biomanufacturing Centre (NBC) in Speke. 
The NBC supports new and existing biotechnology companies, offering product development and 
manufacturing expertise to fill skills and resources gaps that exist in the sector. The NBC aims to establish the Northwest as one of the foremost biomanufacturing regions in Europe. 
Centre for Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases 
The NWDA invested £9m of funding for the construction of a new Centre for Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, to make the School one of the worldÕs leading institutions dedicated to treatments for infectious diseases. The funding has since helped to attract an additional US$100m from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to back an international malaria research programme.
