Mersey Waterfront The Merseyside Waterfront project aims to regenerate MerseysideÕs coastline through connecting the waterfrontÕs communities and assets across the districts of Sefton, Wirral, Liverpool and Halton. Delivered by The Mersey Partnership and supported by the NWDA, the first phase successfully delivered a range of projects from public art and nature reserves to new recreation facilities and public realm. In 2007, the NWDA confirmed £10.9m funding for the second phase of the project, which will run until 2010 and support the delivery of a number of flagship developments including Liverpool Riverlands, a new urban park, a new water-based recreation centre at Crosby Marina and a range of environmental improvements and public art schemes. The Museum of Liverpool The NWDA and partners also recognised the potential of the Mann Island site as a prime location for a new attraction to sit alongside the Three Graces and become another recognisable landmark for the city. Agency investment of over £32m for the Museum of Liverpool kick-started the construction of the new world class cultural facility, which is expected to bring an additional 750,000 visitors a year to the area. The long-term aim is to create one of the worldÕs leading city museums, reflecting LiverpoolÕs global significance through its unique geography, history and culture. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal To support this, the Agency is also providing over £7m to enable British Waterways to extend by 1.4 miles the Leeds and Liverpool canal alongside the waterfront. This project will allow boats to cruise from the canal, across the Pier Head and into the South Docks. Waterfront Connections In addition, Agency funding of £1.9m will go towards the second phase of Investment and Regeneration | the Waterfront Connections scheme, a programme of infrastructure, environmental and public realm improvements. The project aims to improve linkages between visitor attractions at Kings Waterfront, the Albert Dock, Mann Island, the Pier Head and Princes Dock. The scheme will deliver a wide range of projects including the completion of a pedestrian link across the Pier Head to tie in with the new ferry terminal and associated environmental improvements. Canning Maritime Park will be developed as a visitor attraction through a combination of landscaping improvements, new pedestrian buildings and public art.
