| Communications On track for Transport Merseytravel is aiming to become a world-class organisation providing a single integrated transport system for the Merseyside city region, accessible to everyone. Covering the area of Merseyside and working closely with the district councils, Merseytravel co-ordinates public transport, working in partnership with bus and rail operators to provide local solutions for local challenges. Everyday, Merseytravel is making it easier for people who live, work and visit Merseyside to get to where they want to go easily and cost-effectively. On the rails Tens of millions of journeys are made by public transport in Merseyside every year Š and this is continuing to grow. The Merseyrail Electrics network, for example, consistently the best-performing rail operator in the UK, carries around 36 million passengers every year Š and this figure is rising year on year. It is one of the most intensively used networks in the UK with almost 600 train services daily (Monday to Friday). Northern Rail provides services along the busy City Line from Liverpool to Warrington, Wigan, Manchester and beyond. On the road Up to 95,000 vehicles per day cross under the River Mersey via the two Mersey road tunnels. The Tunnels are the two safest road tunnels in the UK and are vital to the regionÕs ongoing economic revival. More than 145 million journeys are made annually by bus, through a mix of commercial and supported services. Of the total bus network on Merseyside, the bus operators provide some 80% commercially while Merseytravel then procures the remaining 20% to meet the demand for socially necessary services. Merseytravel also provides, maintains and improves bus stops, shelters, stations and timetable information and staffs every major bus station from when the first bus arrives until the last bus leaves. On the water Every year, around 700,000 people also take to the waters of the River Mersey on the world famous Mersey Ferries, owned and operated by Merseytravel. The variety of different activities to enjoy makes them the regionÕs best-loved and most popular tourist attraction. The three ferry terminals at Pier Head, Woodside and Seacombe are being transformed as part of MerseytravelÕs commitment to improving the customer experience.
