KTP aims to help business by forming a partnership between an academic or research institution and a company in response to specific, strategic challenges. The Heriot-Watt/Caledonian Alloys partnership was awarded a Winning Partnership Award, the Engineering Excellence Award sponsored by the Royal Academy of Engineering and also the Best Partnership Programme. Cameron Fraser, the Heriot-Watt postgraduate student who was recruited jointly by the University and the company as KTP Associate with Caledonian Alloys, also won a Business Leader of Tomorrow Award in 2006. Cameron, working closely with expert colleagues at Heriot-Watt, project-managed a research and development programme on the companyÕs metal cleaning process, improving throughput and significantly reducing emissions and reducing solvent consumption while Heriot-Watt also helped to identify the latest research on alternative solvents.
