ix universities and six contrasting colleges ranging from the University of Edinburgh (ranked 23rd in the world by The Times Higher Educational Supplement) to the Telford College supply the excellent talent base of the capital, which is one of the most highly qualified in the UK. 
The city is also home to renowned business schools offering well respected and recognised 

qualifications. They work closely with organisations and individuals to develop knowledge and skills that meet the needs of the rapidly changing global business environment. Many schools also support enterprising PhD communities, internationally influential research and have strong links with industry. This includes providing applied management programmes to individual students and major corporations. 
Edinburgh produces world class research with key specialisms including biotechnology, informatics, engineering, electronics, genomics and optoelectronics. The opening of the University of Edinburgh's School of Informatics in 2008 cements its reputation among the world's top four informatics research facilities, rivalling MIT and Stanford in the USA. Overall approximately 60% of Scotland's Research and Development (R&D) spend is in the Edinburgh City Region.
