Recent studies by Transport Scotland revealed, however, that the bridge will need replacing despite constant maintenance over its 40 years of service. Continuing an invaluable access route, the new bridge will be the single largest transport project for a generation and will cost between £1.72bn and £2.34bn. Work is expected to start in 2011 on the dual two-lane carriageway which will include hard shoulders. The existing bridge will be retained as a dedicated corridor for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists. www.forthreplacementcrossing.info Aberdeen Carlisle371 km Dundee 109 265 Example: Edinburgh to London Edinburgh 205 157 99 = 405 miles or 652 km Fort William 254 327 204 213 237 154 131 176 Glasgow 72 Distance Chart 916 Harwich 546 810 696 872 698 Hull 643 273 537 423 598 425 358 Inverness 167 408 105 273 954 223 251 680 867 London 497 761 652 823 649 141 344 904 Manchester 563 193 457 348 519 345 422 156 600 321 404 94 407 246 500 Newcastle 299 192 226 451 464 231 Oban 295 390 311 189 196 72 159 856 582 176 805 502
