| Transport by Road E dinburgh sits at the centre of an extensive road network providing links across Scotland and the UK. The M8, ScotlandÕs busiest motorway, connects Edinburgh to Glasgow in 55 minutes and also provides a link to the M74, the main motorway leading to the south. The journey to Carlisle takes one and a half hours, while Newcastle is two and a half hours away on the A1/M1 serving the east coast. Park and Ride schemes There are six park and ride schemes offering a car-free way into the city centre: Ingliston (west, near the airport) Hermiston (west) Newcraighall (east) Ferrytoll (north) Sheriffhall (south) Straiton (south) These facilities are very popular, with some 100,000 cars using Ingliston and Hermiston Park and Ride in their first six months of operation. Edinburgh City Car Club The Edinburgh City Car Club offers convenient pay-as-you-drive access to a car without the cost and hassle of ownership. Edinburgh Park (see page 44), a prime business park in the city, has a car sharing scheme which aims to reduce car use on the park from 70% in 2003 to 49% by 2013. Several private and community car share schemes also operate across Edinburgh city region. The Tripshare websites, for example, help travellers find others who are going in the same direction by car or taxi. The average user in the Lothians could save an estimated average of £964 per year. www.citycarclub.co.uk www.tripshareedinburgh.com © Forth Estuary Transport Authority
