The capital city of Edinburgh currently boasts an award-winning bus service and in 2011 will be adding a quality, modern and efficient tram network to its public transport system. 
Edinburgh Trams is being funded by and delivered for the Scottish Government and City of Edinburgh Council and tie Limited is the project deliverer. 
To ensure full integration, Edinburgh Trams and Lothian Buses will be managed by Transport Edinburgh Limited (TEL), and together this integrated transport system will offer a reliable and frequent transport choice to EdinburghŐs growing population, business community and tourists. 
Phase 1a is 18km in length and will link Edinburgh Airport, the City Centre and the Waterfront in Leith. The construction of Edinburgh Trams is a complex process, combining the diversion of utilities (power, water, gas, sewage and telecoms) with the laying of specialised tram track. 
Tram works have been well underway on the streets of Edinburgh from summer 2007 and by 2009 utility diversions will have been completed throughout the route. 
The first tram tracks will be laid at the end of 2008 and will continue throughout 2009 with testing and commissioning in 2010. 
The new system will be running on the CapitalŐs streets by 2011, welcoming visitors at Edinburgh Airport and then taking them directly into the heart of EdinburghŐs city centre and on to Leith and the Waterfront.
