Leisure & Tourism | Explore the Stores EdinburghÕs shopping experience is full of diversity Ð whether you want small quirky boutiques, luxury designer labels or the big name high street stores, Edinburgh has it all. T he cityÕs compact size means shoppers can cover a wide variety of shopping experiences all within walking distance of each other, seven days a week. And just outside the city centre lie several out-of-town shopping centres, all within easy reach by public transport or car. Princes Street is probably the most famous shopping street in Edinburgh and home to the equally renowned department store, Jenners, opposite the Scott Monument. It is a great place to start exploring the city as it cuts right between the Old and New Town areas. Shoppers can enjoy moving from the big high street names to the independent retailers. Edinburgh has two large shopping malls, Princes Mall and the St. James Centre and here you will find all the big high street names, including John Lewis. For a touch of luxury, head to Multrees Walk off St Andrew Square, home to Harvey Nichols and other designer names such as Anne Fontaine and Emporio Armani. George Street in the New Town is also renowned for fashionable upmarket shops, such as Cruise, and Broughton Street is a good place for more unusual, exclusive fashions. Rose Street offers a collection of independent stores and a more Ôoff the beaten trackÕ feel. For bespoke jewellery, second-hand shops, galleries and antique shops head to Stockbridge Ð about a 10minute walk from George Street. Raeburn Place, Deanhaugh Street, Hamilton Place, Circus Place and Howe Street offer a wealth of boutique-style shops and galleries to explore. For arts, crafts and antiques, stroll to the Old Town through cobbled streets and lanes to find Jeffrey Street, The Grassmarket and quirky Victoria Street where you can get everything from trendy graphic design t-shirts, original art from Edinburgh students and quality tailoring to antiques and locally produced whiskies. And there are plenty of bars and bistros in between to keep shopping energy levels at maximum. The Grassmarket is a great day and night out with pubs and shops aplenty. Cockburn Street, off the Royal Mile, is great for young, funky clothes, photo galleries and record stores. Victoria Street, Old Town
