Edinburgh future developments To maintain Edinburgh's position as the strongest city economy in the UK outside London, a whole host of developments are planned to help the city grow and remain the lifeblood of Scotland's economy The transport system, key to any city's future success, is set to change as trams are planned for the city by 2010 - opening up the city for visitors, residents and businesses alike. Projects in hand represent investment to the value of £6 billion* and it is hoped that this will in turn bring thousands more jobs to the region. The unemployment rate in Edinburgh is already low at 2.3% (Jan 2006) and its workforce is one of the most highly skilled in the UK - an impressive 34% hold a degree level or professional qualification. Edinburgh's City Centre itself has six projects in the pipeline to improve and enhance its image. Although development of a UNESCO site requires careful planning, opportunities for improvement still exist with one of the key targets to increase the amount of retail space available at locations such as Princes Street, St James Centre and St Andrew Square.
