Developments
Public Transport has been
implementing a significant
programme of change with the
result that public transport in
Northern Ireland is now better,
more modern and growing.
The development of Belfast City has
been mirrored by the development
of the public transport services with
Metro, BelfastÕs bus service playing
a central role in Belfast City life.
The draft Budget allocations for up
to 2011 provide provision for the
purchase of 200 new buses and 20
new trains. In terms of infrastructure
investment, this will be ploughed
into a major track relay project
between Coleraine and Derry, and
invested into improvement works on
the railway line between Knockmore
and Lurgan. In February NI Railways
also announced a £12.6 million
investment in Newry rail station
with a new road link and a 300
space Park & Ride facility. The
Concessionary Fares Scheme for
free travel on public transport is
also set to be extended this Autumn
to everyone 60 years and over.
